Domaine d'Angerville is best known as a leading biodynamic producer in Volnay, but since 2012 they have been making some stunning wine in the Jura as Domaine du Pélican. Their vineyards include five hectares previously belonging to the legendary Jacques Puffeney (now retired) and everything is farmed biodynamically. The wines were superb - elegant and wonderfully refined - from the start and just keep getting better. Grand Curoulet is one of the best terroirs in Arbois. The Savagnin is fermented in foudres and barrels, and aged in 500l used oak barrels. It has lovely freshness, together with a richness from the oak.
Less immediate fruit impact than from the straight Savagnin Ouillé, more mineral and restrained, some stone dust, but you can sense the underlying power of the fruit. It’s herbal to begin but underneath that is some riper fruit – citrus and even lychee – notes, a little smoky too. It’s the stony mineral side that gets stronger as the wine opens. And then there’s a burst of fruit power and intensity on the palate with a lovely grainy tension and mouth-watering depths. Fabulous power and length and yet still so refined.18 points
