When Guy 'Max' Breton took over from his grandfather in 1986, all the domaine's fruit was being sold to the big co-operative wineries then dominating Beaujolais. In the years that followed, Guy, together with fellow winemakers Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Jean Foillard set about turning the movement to mass production around. This so-called 'Gang of Four' returned to traditional techniques, making site-specifc wines from old vines and championing organic farming, minimal doses of sulphur and no fining or filtration.

Nearly forty years later, Breton's wines are among the finest and best-known in Beaujolais. His Morgons are superb, but this Beaujolais Villages, named for his daughter, Marylou, offers stupendous value for money. The fruit comes from 45 year old Gamay vines covering a scant 0.5 hectares. The vines are just 500m from Guy's Morgon vines. Fermentation is with wild yeasts, and the wine is racked to barrels before fermentation ends. Tiny amounts of sulphur are added to preserve freshness, and it is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Marylou is a delicious, light red, bursting with fruit. Guy loves wines that are easy to drink, and this epitomises that approach. It can be served slightly chilled. It's hard to think of a wine at this price that offers more immediate drinking pleasure.
